Product Description

Julie Hadden, one of the most successful and memorable contestants ever on NBC's The Biggest Loser, struggled with her self-worth and her size for years. At age thirty-four she found herself at a crossroads: would she settle for staying 'big' the rest of her life, or would she insist on making big changes instead? Reality-TV fans know which path Julie chose that day. When she stepped on the scale at the show's season-four finale, revealing she had lost an astounding 45 percent of her body weight, she simultaneously stepped into the world's collective heart.

Julie's experience on The Biggest Loser helped birth her new physique, but the transformation went far deeper than that. From displeasure to contentment, from indulgence to self-control, from shame to self-confidence every step along renovation's path, Julie sensed that God was hard at work.

Relying on her classic humor and penetrating candor, Julie offers readers of all shapes and sizes an intimate portrayal of a once-fat woman who sweated and slogged her way toward thin. Additionally she answers frequently asked questions about her weight loss and being a contestant on The Biggest Loser and provides a sampling of her favorite healthy recipes and sample workouts from her current trainer.

In a book that marries introspection with inspiration and teachable moments with rare, behind-the-scenes details about one of the hottest shows on TV, Fat Chance not only will endear readers to the author's firsthand experience, but will inspire them to make healthy changes of their own.

5.0 stars Worth isn't a number on the scale., 2010-08-19;   By: Stephanie's Mommy Brain(Rhode Island, USA)
Julie Hadden, a contestant on The Biggest Loser Season 4, lost almost 100 pounds and has kept it off. In her book, Julie describes how she became obese, her experiences on The Biggest Loser, and her life after reality television.

Julie shares about her childhood as a chubby little girl and tells how she struggled with weight all of her life. An added factor to her battle has been a diagnosis of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). After the birth of her first son, Julie's weight began to increase until she felt hopeless and helpless.

There was much about Julie's story that I relate to. The life-long struggle with weight. Being a stay-at-home mom. And being a Christian. Part of why I like this book so much is that Julie credits her success on The Biggest Loser, and her current life, to God. She unashamedly talks about how God got her attention during the reality show and made her faith very real.

For Julie, church attendance and moral living is no longer about checking off a report card. It's about knowing Jesus and following him. It's about finding your worth and value not in the number on the scale but in the one who created you.

That's a story I can relate to and recommend to all my friends! If you struggle with your weight or your self-esteem or know someone who does, I highly recommend you read Fat Chance. I felt inspired and challenged by Julie and hope I get a chance to hear her speak some day.

5.0 stars Pleasantly surprised..., 2010-07-29;   By: Carolyne(Australia)
Julie is a lovely person and who's weight issues I can relate. The book is more than just a well written behind the scenes look at the Biggest Loser TV show - although it gives ample insight to what the contestants experienced. What is more profound is her honesty, her humour and her spirituality which is so prevalent in her life. She also offers readers wonderful insight on HOW to lose weight. Insight I havent read in previous books. I loved and will re-read this book. One of the best.

4.0 stars Well written and inspiring., 2010-05-07;   By: peacehope(Michigan)
Oddly enough, Julie participated on the only season of Biggest Loser that I have NOT seen. Therefore, I had no expectations of what to expect from her book. It had come recommended to me, so I thought I'd give it a try for extra weight-loss motivation.

I enjoyed reading this book and had to force myself to not race through it. I myself appreciated the Christian references. However, non-Christians might have an issue with those, as they are a very big part of this book.

Thanks for sharing your journey with us, Julie.

I love this book. Very interesting and easy to read. Gives a new perspective on the spiritual views of weight loss. Would recommend to anyone who needs a boost of self esteem.

1.0 stars Not What I Was Expecting, 2010-03-28;   By: Doofie(NYC)
I purchased Hadden's FAT CHANCE because having recently lost seventy pounds myself and being a fan of THE BIGGEST LOSER, I was hoping to be inspired to keep the weight off and perhaps also get a sneak peek behind the scenes. I have to say, the book is a disappointment. Yes, we do get the sneek peek behind the scenes but it's disjointed and random, it's not a story about the show really, which was what I was expecting.

I guess the thing that bothered me the most is the constant religious references. I am not religious myself. I feel everyone has the right to worship and believe as they please. That being said, I would have not spent money on this book if I'd known that it would contains countless passages of sermonizing and preaching. I understand that Hadden's faith is a huge part of what sustains her and helps her. I even respect that. I don't want to read about it. This is Hadden's story and she has the right to express it in whatever way she wishes, but I feel it's important to let other readers know that God plays a huge part in this book before they purchase it. Personally, I feel like Hadden is shoving her religion down my throat which makes me wish I could bring back the book for a refund.

Something else that bothers me? Constant references to pop culture movies and then how Hadden feels they apply to her life. Are you kidding? When an author does that, that is a screaming sign that they are uneducated and just trying to fill up pages. It's not professional or credible. My advice? Watch the show and skip this poorly written, ridiculous excuse of an autobiography? You want inspiration? Read Shauna Wharton's "The Adventures of Dietgirl."
