Beck is bummed. Really bummed. And if song titles such as "Lost Cause," "Lonesome Tears," "Already Dead," and "Nothing I Haven't Seen" don't make the point, his achingly sad lyrics and Sea Change's unerringly downcast sound do. While 1998's Mutations--arguably the singer-songwriter's masterwork and Sea Change's spiritual cousin--was filled with unflinching self-examination, moments of levity were found in songs like "Tropicalia." Not so on Sea Change. Beck's woozy, almost narcoleptic delivery seems to amplify the set's sense of ennui. But sad isn't necessarily bad, and despite the somber tone, there's much to praise, not the least of which is the return of producer Nigel Goderich (Mutations, Radiohead), who wraps Beck's gloom in a dreamy, warm blanket of soft strings and floating bleeps and gurgles. Like Daniel Lanois, Goderich is all about vibe, and even Beck's most bare-bones songs benefit from billowy atmospherics. That's especially true of "Paper Tiger," a restless, slowly building epic improbably propelled by a languid orchestra and Beck's expressionless drone. The inky black feel of "Round the Bend"--a glacially slow dirge with muffled vocals--may be the darkest thing Beck's ever written, not counting the very grim "Already Dead." Whatever's going on in Beck's world, at least we know he's purging, which, all things considered, may be better for his soul than ours. --Kim Hughes

5.0 stars One of Beck's lesser-known gems, 2010-08-09;   By: Sarah Weinraub(Chicago, IL)
Sadly, most people's knowledge of Beck starts and ends with "Loser." Listeners seeking more of the same will be disappointed by Sea Change - but anyone with an ear for a good melody will be surprised by the versatility and depth of musicianship on this album. It features stripped-down, emotional melodies that manage to be both listenable and unpretentious. Songs feature haunting lyrics, catchy guitar riffs and orchestral interludes.

5.0 stars This Might Hurt A Bit..., 2010-01-27;   By: JuSt AnOtHeR oNiOnHeAd(Port Chester, NY)
Everybody hates this album... broken lyrics, broken people, too much introspection, overproduced---nope.
It's painful. And it's brilliant. I don't know how he wrote all of these very sad and painful, gut wrenching songs.
Easy to toss it off, but this is sorrow that we have all felt and BECK CONVEYS IT COMPLETELY AND WITHOUT MERCY.
This is merciless personal bloodletting. It absolutely brought me to tears. It's extreme and at times over produced.
But most of the time it's just digging directly into the part of my soul, the human soul that matters, the soul that's terrified of the next painful cut, the loss, the one perfect woman that walked away, the imperfect parents that are now children in my eyes--all stability and attachment wrenched away, say hello to personal desolation...

I tried to find Guthrie, Dylan, the great folk artists of the 1960's like Fred Neil (who I really love - wrote "Everybody's Talkin' at Me and "The Dolphins") Nope. This is original introspection and fear, written with some of the greatest acoustic guitar licks that push it forward into future standalone territory. It's goddamned genius. Listen to it - all of it. Draw your own conclusions. I doubt you'll hate it. You may sense an element of commercialism toward the end (which, BTW, fails) Why do I love this album. It's very simple...it dragged me through almost every emotion I am capable of feeling. And so few musical productions lately can elicit that kind of response--especially in a fairly jaded (near) 50 year old.

Just listen to it. No amount of page text can ever do it justice.

And, no, it's not the Holy Grail either!

4.0 stars one of his best, 2009-09-22;   By: S. Alessandro(Tavernerio, Como Italy)
I have almost all Beck's works and this is the best together with "mutations". I prefer Beck when he does not exaggerate with his usual "kind-mix mood". Sometimes this feature leads to ingenious and pleasant songs, specially in albums like Mellow Gold or Odelay. But the risk to make mess songs is not do far...Sea Change is completely different: unplugged and orchestrated, he could sound monochord at first, but it grows constantly with listenings for the strenght of each song!
