Album Description

At the heart of every great rock and roll band lie four essential elements: bass, drums, guitars and vocals. That, in its purest essence, is JET. And JET, in their purest essence, have again captured those elements with their third album, Shaka Rock. With their previous releases- 2003's Get Born and 2006's Shine On- JET broke out of their native Australia and established themselves as a multi-platinum, international success story, merging the charisma and energy of classic rock and roll with just enough punk swagger and contemporary flair to create something uniquely theirs. Here at last is a band that's returning the cool to rock and roll.

2009's Shaka Rock reveals new dimensions of JET while never losing the raw roots of Get Born or the grace and melody of Shine On, which together went on to make JET an international band of style and substance.

Album Description

2009 release, the third album from the Australian Alt-Rockers. Rock 'n' Roll: some would argue that it's become all smoke and mirrors, plug-ins and effects. True in certain cases, but not at all for Jet. Hailing from Melbourne, Jet have established themselves as a multi-platinum, international success story, merging the charisma and energy of classic Rock 'n' Roll with just enough Punk swagger and contemporary flair to create something uniquely theirs. Shaka Rock includes 12 finely crafted tracks that reveals new dimensions of Jet, while never losing the raw roots of Get Born or the grace and melody of Shine On.

4.0 stars A Prime Example of 'Beer Rock', 2009-12-30;   By: Flap Jackson(State Road, NC)
Jet is often considered as a band that is wanna-be classic rock, to which I say that Jet is "Beer Rock," and nothing more. AC/DC and other bands of this type don't often fit the feel of the modern beer commercial, but Jet thrives and lives off the cold beverage. When they try to strive further, they often falter, but at least they didn't draw up anything truly annoying this time around. And while it's true contribution to originality is very debatable, one thing's for sure, they've got a Monopoly on beer ads for the foreseeable future.

Highlights Include:
K.I.A.
Black Hearts (On Fire)
She's A Genius
Goodbye Hollywood

In Fact, the only time where I see them directly imitating classic rock, is the AC/DC impression that is 'Start The Show.' Other times, especially on 'Black Hearts,' the band is just in kick-a** beer ad mode, which the beer companies have smartly taken advantage of to great success. This along with 'She's A Genius' may not be the greatest rock songs in rock, of the decade, or even the year, but they do the job perfectly. The album also toys with some interesting ideas (Goodbye Hollywood, Walk), to varying degrees of success, but again, nothing is unlistenable the way 'Look What You've Done' was.

Overall, the best album by the band in the overall sense. You can take that statement how you will, but it's major strength is its ease of listenability, and its use of 'Beer Rock.' Again, it might not be original, but it does the job.

Note: Amazingly, the best quality songs are relegated to bonus track status. 'Everything Will Be Alright' sounds like a Beatles cover song, but they pull it off rather well, taking the slow approach and vocals to good success. 'Don't Break me Down' is one of those concert closers where the whole crowd sings along as the band plays off the stage. Again, not the most original, but the band pulls it off in great fashion, especially towards the end. Put together, these songs make for a better closer than 'She Holds A Grudge,' although that song has its moments.

5.0 stars Good album, 2009-10-20;   By: A. Tieck(Whitewater, WI)
Long time JET fan. Overall Great album! and much more up-beat than their last album; shine on. I would say however; a number of the songs and guitar riffs are reminiscent of other bands (one in particular comes to mind: The beatles).

If you like garage rock, and you don't mind some recycled sounds, its still a really good album.

4.0 stars great band, great music, 2009-10-19;   By: A. Osefoh
No contemporary band does classic rock better than JET. Shaka Rock is a great example of how far JET has come, and how far JET will go. My favorite tracks are Seventeen, La Di Da, and Times Like This.

5.0 stars Great JET! Not Get Born or Shine On, but still great..., 2009-09-28;   By: Nacho(Middletown, PA USA)
Shaka Rock is an all around fun album to listen to. It's got a lot of catchy tunes that you'll want to just keep playing over and over again. While I feel this CD lacks the classic rock roots that Get Born and even Shine On contained, that in no way makes this CD a bad investment.

I also noticed about Shaka Rock that it's lacking in the slow tunes. Get Born's "Look What You've Done," "Move On," "Radio Song," "Come Around Again," and "Timothy" as well as Shine On's "Kings Horses," "Shine On," "Shiny Magazine," and "Eleanor" showed off their ability to turn down the volume when needed, and a few of those songs are incredible soft, slow songs. However, the closest thing to any of those for JET on Shaka Rock is the very last song, "She Holds A Grudge." And while I think this is an incredible song, especially to end the album on, I wish there'd have been a little more slow songs that we could just relax to.

But don't take this review the wrong way. Fans of JET on Get Born and Shine On will still be very pleased with the turn out here. Just don't expect the EXACT same thing... just a variation on the same theme I guess.

So, if you're looking for an album FULL of catchy, fast-paced, and just plain cool tunes, Shaka Rock is for you. This CD will add nicely to your collection, it's got great JET sound and a lot of music you'll want to hear again and again.

Plus, it's got a burning van on the front!

1.0 stars Never Really Grabbed Me, 2009-09-27;   By: NetGroover(Monterey, CA)
Get Born was a great album, fresh and rock solid; Shine On was a worthy follow-up which grew on me with each listen. I've managed to endure Shaka Rock several times all the way through, and I can honestly say, there is not one song I want to listen to again. I find I FWD a lot, and never RWD. The hooks seem less edgy, more fluffy, and ultimately less interesting to me. I"m glad some of the reviewers liked it, but I'm definitely in the camp of the disappointed. Frankly, when I read all those raving reviews, it makes me suspect that those are record label execs trying to push sales.
